New Real Estate Web Design for the Southport area!

Impact Media has just launched a new Real Estate Website with some of the latest features from our company. Web Design was important, but user experience was just as important on this version and the owner of the new REMAX franchise in Southport, NC, Debby Daigle, really wanted to build a website that would be providing her clients a great user experience, by making it easier for them to find exactly what they were looking for in her area. Debby has been a client of Impact Media for 3 years and she uses our services for not only web design, but for SEO (search engine optimization) and all of her internet marketing in general. We are working on several other projects for her and cannot wait to show those off one day soon as well!

The Heat Is On!

Google Analytics has long been thought to be the standard for website statistics.  A recent improvement on an old method and a reduction of cost is changing everything.

Eye tracking for statistical purposes has been around for decades, but until recently the methods for this data collection option have been incredibly pricey.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on a single study limiting the usefulness of this practice to a very select few.

A study completed back in 2001 by three Carnegie Mellon professors, Mon-Chu Chen of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and John Anderson & Myeong-Ho Sohn of the Psychology Department released findings of a study they completed entitled, What can a mouse cursor tell us more? Correlation of eye/mouse movements on web browsing.

In their paper they wrote:

The data suggest that there is a strong relationship between gaze position and cursor position. The data also show that there are regular patterns of eye/mouse movements. Based on these findings, we argue that a mouse could provide us more information than just the x, y position where a user is pointing. This implies that we can use an inexpensive and extremely popular tool as an alternative of eye-tracking systems, especially in web usability evaluation. Moreover, by understanding the intent of every mouse movement, we may be able to achieve a better interface for human computer interaction.

This revelation led to the development of a new statistical gathering category called web heat maps.  What these types of software do is allow you to see exactly where on your webpage a visitor has clicked.  This can be incredibly invaluable because knowing where a visitor clicks, and just importantly doesn’t click can allow a company to reconfigure a site to maximize their lead conversions.  For instance, you might have three main areas on your web page, one is your feature article, one is your contact form and another is a photo gallery.  With a heat map you would be able to tell which areas were actually being used by visitors and which areas were being avoided.  If your contact form is one of the avoided areas, then you know something needs to be changed in order to make it work.  With each tweak you make, you will be able to tell quickly if the change worked or not.  This kind of practice can turn a website into an incredibly efficient marketing and lead generating tool.  That in turn should lead to a higher lead conversions which gives us our ultimate goal and that is higher profits.

So where is the best place to get a web heat mapping tool and how expensive is it?   As of the writing of this article, we feel that CrazyEgg.com offers the best tools for the highest value.  For as little as $9 a month you can get web heat maps on 10 pages of your site with daily reporting.  This includes a Heatmap Report, Scrollmap Report, Confetti Report, Overlay Report, List Report, and Multi Domains Tracking.  That’s quite a bit for that low of a price.  For anyone who now thinks that Impact Media Solutions is affiliated with CrazyEgg.com, I can promise you that we are not.  Our goal is to educate our clients on ways to improve their business and achieve higher profits.

If you would like to try the tools from CrazyEgg.com out or another web heat mapping software and need assistance applying the code to your website, drop me a line at cs@impactmedianc.com and I can help you take care of that.  We can also help you review your statistics and make recommendations on how your site can be improved, maximizing your lead conversions.  By the way, CrazyEgg.com offers 30 days for free!

Is Your Landing Page an Underperformer?

Take our test and find out if your landing page needs improvement.

Please answer each question with a rating between 1 and 10.  1 equals Really Easy and 10 equals Really Difficult.

Question 1)  When visitors reach my landing page, how easy is it for them to navigate?

Question 2)   How difficult is the language in the web copy for your visitor to understand?

Question 3)   How would you rate your color scheme based on how well the visitors eyes can flow across it when scanning the page?

Question 4)   How clear do you present what your sign-up form is all about?

Question 5)   More than five questions on a form becomes burdensome to the visitor.  How would you rate yours?

Question 6)   With the average rate of six seconds to capture a visitors attention when they reach a page.  How do you rate yours as far as its ease to capture their attention.

Question 7)   How difficult have you found it to capture leads from the website?

Now look at your answers and really examine the questions where you answered five or higher.  These are problem points on your page, but now that you have pin pointed them, you can make the necessary changes and improve your lead generation.

Q1) No one likes clutter and there is some great truth to the idea of “Too Much Information”  Most business owners are very excited about their work and really want to educate their clients, but usually it’s too much.  With a website, your goal isn’t too give them a complete education.  Your goal is to give them just enough so that they will want to learn more and then utilize your contact form.   If your business was a movie, then your website needs to be the movie trailer.

Q2) You  might know all the jargon for your industry and can talk it with the best of them.  Your potential client might see it as a foreign language.  Remember, you are not dumbing it down, you’re just making it more accessible.  The education starts when they get in front of you.  The information on your site needs to be easy to read and understand.

Q3) Believe it or not, your color scheme can become a big problem.  Remember, most people are now looking at websites through very high resolution screens.  If your color scheme is distracting, people will leave…immediately.  Make sure your color scheme is subtle and allows for a flow.  It’s feng shue for the digital world.

Q4)  Your sign-up form is your call-to-action.  There should be no doubt in your visitor’s mind to what they are signing up for.  If it’s for a free consultation, then make sure that is clearly stated at the top. If it’s for a quote, then make sure that’s at the top.  People hate signing up for things they are not sure about.

Q5)  When you create your form on your site, make sure you are asking for the minimum of what you need to know.  If you can get by with only knowing their name, email address and phone number then only ask for that.  When you start asking too many questions people will either feel you are becoming intrusive or they will get impatient and abandon it.  You can ask all the questions you want once they are in front of you.

Q6)  Does your page suffer from the “Shiny Object Effect”?  When a visitor comes to your site, are there so many things for them to look at that they don’t know where to start?  Again, think of it as digital feng shue.  Your job is to make sure their comfort level is maximized.  If they have too much to look at or choose from a visitor will get discouraged and will leave.  In the same way of thinking for your form, the site needs to have the minimum.  You should give them just enough for them to want to learn more.

Q7)  Never ever forget that the main reason for a small business to have a website is to generate leads.  If you already have it set up properly and achieving the amount of leads you want to gain, then do not change a thing.  If you want more then make sure you have read the above six answers and get to work on that site!

Web Design, Search Engine Optimization & Internet Marketing

Monkey Junction Self Storage shopped several web design firms in town and was very thorough before deciding to use Impact Media for their Internet Marketing project. They are very happy they made the choice they did, with the results they have gotten to date, and we are just beginning with the launch of their BRAND NEW website.
When Mr. McGirt first came to us there were several items that were very important to him, so what Impact Media did was to take those items and formulate a strategy and incorporate that into an action plan that first started with his Web Design and User Interface. We wanted to know what people used his site for mainly and what he wanted them to use it for going forward on the new website, and so we began our journey.
Now with the new web design up, we have just begun the SEO or Search Engine Optimization portion of his Internet Marketing strategy. This portion of the plan will entail Impact Media leveraging certain aspects of his site, and other sites to gain a better rank on the Search Engines to provide his website better exposure. Please see below for an image of the new site, and you can click to go to the website.

The Importance of Understanding Your Website in Today’s Internet Universe

If you’re website isn’t generating the business you feel it should, don’t blame the website.  It might be you.

I recently met with a client who felt that his website was nothing more than an online brochure…it was nice to have, but only two calls in the past year were generated from someone visiting his site.  He mentioned that he had read an article that his particular industry (wealth management) wasn’t really suited for developing leads from the internet.

My immediate question to him was, “How old was that article?”

He admitted that it was a little dated and that, in a nut shell, is the problem with many business owners today when it comes to how they view their website.  Their ideas and perceptions of the internet are dated

One of the most common metaphors I have heard is that the internet is the Wild West.  Well guess what happened to the Wild West?  People started laying their claims and developing their lands.  Pretty soon it wasn’t the Wild West anymore; it became an industrialized segment of our country.  That is what has happened with the internet.  It has gone to the next level and that means as a business or marketing manager, you have to be aware of these changes.  Do you know about responsive web design, or that Flash doesn’t work on iPads and iPhones, or that your website copy (the written content) is incredibly important to search engine optimization.

At the end of the meeting I told him that in a year from now, I wanted him to receive viable leads WEEKLY from his Impact Media built site.  That is purpose of a business website…to generate leads for your company.  It is not just a billboard;  it is a 24 hour sales representative whose sole function is to capture the attention of someone who is looking for your product or service.  Because it is a digital world, your options of how you program your online sales representative are almost endless.

Let’s look at this way..

You have hired a new salesperson for your business.  That salesperson has a good look, they dress nice and they have some familiarity with your product or service.  You put them out there and how do you think they are going to do?  They will probably do okay and get you some business based on their surface skills.  But that’s not what a successful company does.  The companies that are constantly out-performing their goals are the ones that thoroughly train their sales staff.  They make sure each account manager knows that company inside and out and then they equip them with whatever tools they need to create a compelling presentation.  If you do this then you have not only maximized your salesperson’s potential; you have maximized YOUR earning potential.

It’s the same thing with a website.  You can’t just toss up a website, even it if looks good and has all the proper information and expect it to maximize your earning potential.  I have read countless ads on Craigslist that read, “Small business needs website but has limited budget. This is the perfect opportunity for a college student.”  I call this the Craigslist Blues.  They are absolutely correct in one way.  It is the perfect opportunity for a college student because the college student needs experience and cash.  However, it’s a terrible business decision.  A college student doesn’t know the ins and outs of the ever-changing world of the internet and while that business owner may, theoretically, end up with a good looking site, its underlying function could be completely worthless.

Here is another example:  The other day, I met with an attorney who had traded out legal services for web design services.  Her “designer” ended up using a FREE online service to create her site.  The attorney asked me to take a look at it and give her my opinion.  I found all her contact information, which legal services she offered, times of business, a bio, pictures of her, and some pictures of the city (which I am positive were used in violation of copyright laws).  What this lawyer had was a Flash based website that wouldn’t function on an iPhone or an iPad; it wasn’t set up to be found by Google and it completely lacked a responsive design. It was a website that would have worked well in 2002, but had she stuck with it, she’d have cut herself off from maximizing her revenue potential.  She is now a client of Impact Media.

A good web developer will create a site for you that offers responsive web design which means that no matter what device you are viewing the website from, it will look proper and easy to read. This is crucial with the ever expanding world of smartphone ownership and our reliance on them for internet browsing.  A good designer will create a layout that will look professional and will play on the psychology of the web viewer.  They will optimize the copy so that the search  engines will find it using the most recent search methods.   Up-to-date knowledge is crucial because Google, Yahoo and Bing are constantly updating their search engine algorithms.  Google makes minor tweaks to their process 200 to 300 times a year and they make 3 to 5 major changes each year.

So now you’re saying, Okay C.S., I have a professionally built website optimized by the right keywords, with a responsive web design that includes a 60 second video of me presenting my company…bring on the leads

You are definitely closer, but it’s not quite that simple.  In my next blog entry I will discuss the most effective marketing strategy for your website in today’s internet climate.

Mobile Websites – Just as Important as Apps | Wilmington NC

Lately there has been a rush for everyone to create apps for iPhone, Android and even Blackberry, but one of the lesser expensive alternatives you can do, that is still full featured, is to build yourself a mobile website that operates on Mobile Devices. We have been developing Mobile Websites for several years now and the thing we like about them is the flexibility we have. It is just like a regular website on smaller, so basically if you can do it on a regular sized site, you can do it on Mobile Website, although there are some things you may not want to for the sake of optimizing the site for Mobile devices. Such as you will want to limit your images, and absolutely NO FLASH, so it will run on iPhones and iPads. Then what you do is test your Mobile Website from your phone some and see how you can make it more user friendly for your clients. There is always something new you can add or do down the road, but we suggest trying to keep it as intuitive and simple as possible considering the amount space you have to work with. Below is a Mobile Website we just launched in the Wilmington/Brunswick Real Estate arena that you can search MLS from as well it will allow you to view properties that are around you without having to search anything. We enjoyed creating this Mobile Website for Plantation Properties and hope it helps them with their marketing!

New Live Music Venue in Wilmington NC

Impact Media Solutions has just launched a new website for The Brikhouse! The Brikhouse is a new nightclub located in downtown Wilmington, NC. It is built in a historic building that has a lot of sentimental value to me personally, it is where I used to go see bands play when it was called Jacobs Run, this was back in the early 90′s. The owner of the Brikhouse approached us to design a website that offered a Rock ‘n Roll theme and would allow them post shows independently and have those shows syndicate to their social media streams such as Facebook and Twitter. We took on the challenge and designed a site that provides all of the information a patron would be looking for when searching for live music in Wilmington, along with making it rank on Search Engines by providing Search Engine Optimization services to ensure that the site gets top billing on Google, Yahoo & Bing.

This Friday the 13th was their first day of being open and they had a great turnout! We look forward to seeing you down @ The Brikhouse!

User Testing Web Design

When you are designing or re-designing your site you want it to look good, but there are other factors to take into consideration. The biggest of course is that you want it to produce revenue, either through lead conversion, or merchandise transactions, that is why making your site user friendly should take precedence over everything else. This is not a onetime endeavor however, when your site goes live you should be monitoring how people are using it and where you can make improvements. You should treat it like a living extension of your business. If you respond to your clients by making a better site by catering to them, they will respond by using your services more often, it is that simple. We use tools like Heat Maps (Pictured Below) and Analytics, along with various other tools to accomplish these tasks. Ongoing user testing will produce a better website for your business and in turn grow your business beyond what you have seen before. This is not a new idea, it is something that most successful webmasters do for their clients already in various programs. If you are interested in learning more about User Testing on your website or other programs such SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing) or even just setting up Analytics on your site please me know and I will be happy to help.
