When you are designing or re-designing your site you want it to look good, but there are other factors to take into consideration. The biggest of course is that you want it to produce revenue, either through lead conversion, or merchandise transactions, that is why making your site user friendly should take precedence over everything else. This is not a onetime endeavor however, when your site goes live you should be monitoring how people are using it and where you can make improvements. You should treat it like a living extension of your business. If you respond to your clients by making a better site by catering to them, they will respond by using your services more often, it is that simple.
