Here are FIVE apps that we think you will find fun or useful.

Instructables: This is one of the most fun websites we have ever been to and now that they have an app…our heads are about to explode with excitement.  Instructables is for anyone who loves being creative.  It is free to register and you can sort through all kinds of projects that people have created such as a pocket-sized power supply, marshmallow revolver and speed loader, a silhouette lamp and strawberry butter.  Their categories include Technology, Workshop, Living, Food, Play and Outside.  If you have an extra few minutes, visit the website or go to your app store and download the app. You will be amazed by what you find and we bet you will probably see something that you are going to want to try.  http://www.instructables.com/

SnapChat – (from the Snapchat website) Snapchat is a new way to share moments with friends. Snap an ugly selfie or a video, add a caption, and send it to a friend (or maybe a few). They’ll receive it, laugh, and then the snap disappears. The image might be a little grainy, and you may not look your best, but that’s the point. It’s about the moment, a connection between friends, and not just a pretty picture. Snapchat.com Note from Impact: There is a bug in the new iOS7 operating system that will allow someone receiving a snapshot to take a screen shot and store it.  We are sure the bug will be fixed soon, but be warned.

Tor – (from the Tor website) Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. Torproject.org    From Impact: The copy comes off as a little paranoid (a little?), but in this day and age, paranoia is not such a bad thing.  If you have any questions about using this, post them on our Facebook page and we will do our best to answer them.

Metal DetectorFrom Impact: Who is ready to go to the beach and find some hidden treasure…or all the change that fell out of sixteen tourists pockets yesterday?  At first I thought this was going to be some cheap “trying to be funny but not really” app.  According to the 26,000 people who have rated this and gave it an average of 4.3 stars out of 5, there is the real deal.  According to the app description page, here is how it works.  This app measures magnetic field values using the magnetic sensor that is built into the phone. The magnetic field level(EMF) in nature is about 49μT(microtesla) or 490mG(milligauss); 1μT = 10mG. If there is any metal in the area, the strength of the magnetic field should increase. Among other uses, it can be helpful in finding electrical wires in walls (like a stud finder) and metal in the ground.

Now that you have seen it can be used as a stud finder, we are sure you are going to wear a belt and tell your wife to scan you.  Our bet is that she is going to tell you, “Something must be wrong with it,”.  Ha!

DogSnap: (From their app description) DogSnap is the second in a series of electronic field guides developed by scientists from Columbia University and the University of Maryland. This free mobile app uses visual recognition software to help identify a dog’s breed from a photograph of its face.  Take a snap shot of the dog and the app will help you identify it.

From Impact:  We also think this makes a great app for the geek who has a hard time meeting members of the opposite sex.  “Excuse me, I have a new app I want to try out that is supposed to be able to use recognition software to tell me what kind of dog I am looking at.  May I take a picture of your beautiful dog?” We do not expect a wedding invitation when it works out, but a virtual high five on our Facebook page would be nice.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dogsnap/id532468586?mt=8

TABLETS ARE TAKING OVER, IS YOUR COMPANY READY?

I bought my first tablet, an iPad first generation on the first day the iPad 2 was released.  The $100 drop in price was too tempting and I justified selling a few silver coins I inherited from my dad to pay for it because this was going to be a great investment for my job.  It is now two years later and I feel it was one of the best consumer electronic investments I have ever made.  I do use it in my professional life, but I use it more in my personal life.  In fact once the rest of the family started using it, it was no longer mine and became family property.  The daily schedule got to the point that I knew when I got home that my mother-in-law was going to use it for two hours to play her Slotomania.  After her time was up, my five year old daughter ask for it so she play her Easy-Bake oven app until it was close to bed time.  My wife would use it here and there, but she was the first to get a smartphone so when my daughter would go to bed I would finally get my time to play Angry Birds.  This past Christmas my mother-in-law got her own tablet and when my daughter turned six earlier this year we gave her a tablet designed specifically for children.  My iPad was finally all mine again.

Our family is just one example that supports the report that was just released by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project which revealed that 34% of American adults own a tablet.  In two years our household went from 0 to 3 and even my mom and her husband bought an iPad 2 in that time.  It is becoming very apparent that all the early predictions that the tablet will replace the laptop are not only coming true, it is happening much faster than previously thought.  Most consumers don’t need much more computing power than something to edit pictures, watch videos, update their social media and play games.  When you combine something that can do all of that, is smaller than a Dr. Seuss book and it takes HD pictures and videos while allowing you to store everything in the cloud you have the recipe for the end of laptops computing.

When it comes to business, your company in particular the tablet holds incredible significance.  There are many ways you can incorporate a tablet as a working tool.  We have some clients that use it for sales presentations, portable POS systems and administrative units.  What is more important though is how your website is viewed on your customers and potential customer’s tablets.  Most companies have been slow to adapt a responsive design to their websites which will end up costing them money, possibly quite a bit in the short run.  In the long run it will be crippling.

If your website has a responsive design it means that it has been programmed to reconfigure itself based on the mobile device viewing it.  There is no enlarging the screen with two fingers or moving the page to the left and right so you can read a complete sentence.  It means when your customer or potential customer visits your site, all the navigation is laid out right before them in simple, easy-to-see and understand navigation.  It is getting to the point that if a potential customer visits your website and it is small and hard to see when they reach the page, they are already so tired of hassling with sites just like yours that they will simply move on.  Are you not the same way?

I am going to give you another advantage of having a responsive design.  Are you a business owner who would like to have an app to offer your customers for their mobile device, but you know you can’t afford the thousands of dollars it would cost to produce it?  First you should take the price you think it will cost and triple it because when you create a mobile app, it has to be programmed for each mobile operating system.  If you created an app for the iPad or iPhone, it will not work on an Android or Windows system.  Here is the good news.  Most companies would only require a simple app anyway with basic tools for the consumer.  You can do this for a much lower cost by utilizing a responsive design for your website.  That way you can provide the function and tools your customer might need and it will work on all three operating systems.  You just saved your company thousands of dollars!

One third of our country’s adults own a tablet and over half own a smartphone.  While most of the country is like my family and use them for entertainment purposes, it is becoming their primary way of finding things they want to spend their money on.  It is the same for business professionals.  If you are ready to work with a company who specializes in responsive designs, finds gratification through helping clients increase their bottom line and enjoys communicating with clients as often as they need then you should give us a call.

Impact Media works with companies all over southeastern North Carolina and the upper South Carolina region including Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, Bladen, Onslow, Raleigh and Myrtle Beach.  Our clients include Coldwell Banker SeaCoast Realty, Fine Coastal Living, Atlantic Metal Roofing, The Wilmington Arts Council, Alpha Mortgage, Southern Home Builders, CDB Corp. and over two hundred more companies who are local and global leaders in their industries.  We are also more than happy to provide you with references upon request.  Give us a call today at 910-679-4471 and schedule a free assessment consultation.  We will listen to your internet marketing needs, help you determine if your website can integrate a responsive design so you do not need an entire new one and present you with options to help meet your goals and increase your leads.  Now back to your tablet and that game of Words with Friends you started two weeks ago!

When it might be time to fire your SEO Company

While there are many search engines to choose from, Google holds about 65% of the market share with its closest competitor hanging around the 15% mark.  It is critical to know if the SEO Company you work with is keeping up with the changes Google periodically makes changes to their algorithm.  It is just as important to know if your SEO Company uses White Hat or Black Hat techniques.  White Hat means the company optimizing your website follows the rules and regulations set forth by the search engine companies, namely Google.  Black Hat means they are using improper methods to manipulate the algorithm.  While they might assure you they are using White Hat methods, the most recent Google update will prove quickly if they are being truthful or not.

Penguin 2.0 is the name given to the newest update to Google’s algorithm.  The first Penguin targeted unnatural inbound links and other versions of web spam.  P20 is still brand new, but it looks like it gives Penguin stronger search and destroy abilities for websites who are using Black Hat methods.  This means that you can end up paying a very dear price for your SEO Company’s unethical methods.  To give you some sense of how strict Google is with their SEO rules, they have penalized their own company on multiple occasions.

So if Google is penalizing their own company, what chance do you have?  If your SEO Company is ethical and utilizes White Hat methods you should have nothing to worry about.  A good way to check is to Google yourself (it’s hard to write that, even as an adult and not laugh).  Make sure you have completely signed out of any Google account you might have (YouTube, Google Pages, etc.).  When signed in, Google will use your search history, location, and attributes to tailor your search results so signing out removes those variables and you get a truer sense of where your website ranks.  Once you have Googled your site, if you notice that it has fallen down in the rankings drastically, then there is a very good chance that your SEO Company is not very ethical.  Then it is time to give them a call, start getting answers and maybe do some firing.

Here at Impact Media, we take quite a bit of pride in our ethics and standards.  Honestly we were very happy with the new Penguin update because it will help our clients out.  If their competitors are utilizing Black Hat SEO methods, then there is a good chance they will be penalized and our clients will reap the rewards.  If you are wondering if your SEO Company is a good choice or not, one question to ask is, “Did they make me sign a contract?”  Our SEO policy is to never have the client sign a contract because if we are doing a bad job then they should be free to take their money somewhere else.  We have yet to lose a client because we could not deliver first page rankings.  On the other hand we have heard several horror stories from new clients here in Wilmington, N.C. about certain companies, one well known company in particular, that never delivers on their SEO promises and refuses to let businesses out of their 12 month contract.  That is just wrong.

You can trust Impact Media and we are more than happy to supply you with several references to back that claim up.  You can also check out a couple of video testimonials.  The first is from Joey Milam, Marketing Director of Alpha Mortgage and the second is John Hickey, owner of Southern Exposure Sunrooms.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1TqDXFyW4uM

Open Sesame! Ignoring Simple Steps Leaves Your Smartphone Vulnerable To EVERYONE.

In part one of our new web blog series dedicated to smartphones, we examine a few ways to protect your Apple or Android device from thieves.

I work for a company that not only provides internet marketing services such as SEO, copy writing and web development, but we also have an technical division that handles everything from setting up servers and networks to computer repair.  One of the main reasons a client will bring in their computer is because of a virus and many times the virus is trying to extract information from their system.

Your smartphone is a computer and is just as vulnerable to a virus as your laptop, but because of its size it becomes an easy target for a thief that could be standing next to you.  A simple way to discourage a potential larcenist is activating your phone’s password feature.  Yes I know, this is a revelation, but as simple as this solution is, most people do not utilize it.  The most common reason is it becomes a hassle to constantly enter your password, but it will be an even greater inconvenience if someone gets access to all your information, including your financial information.

I found a great tutorial for both Apple and Android users that explains, with pictures, how you can turn on your password protection.  The tutorial originates from the Smith College of Information Technology Services in Northhampton, Massachusetts.

http://www.smith.edu/its/tara/mobile_devices/md_password.html

If your phone is stolen, you can also remotely wipe the information stored on it.

Apple iPhone

1) Tap and open Settings.

2) Then find iCloud and turn on the Find My iPhone feature.

3) If the unfortunate happens and your phone is stolen, then you can download an app on another iOS device called Find My iPhone or you can log into icloud.com.  These two methods, once you are logged in, will allow you to remotely lock the phone with a password, wipe the phone, engage a sound on the phone or send a message.

Android

There is a great site you need visit called AndroidLost.com  According to their website, this software will allow you to:

Read SMS’es

Remote control alarm

Sound the alarm on your phone from your PC!

Find the location of your phone on a map.

Send SMS’es from your PC (All replies will still go to your phone.)

Lock the phone

Wipe the phone

Pop up messages on the phone (in case you lose the phone and a good Samaritan has found it)

Forward your calls

No battery use

Camera (AndroidLost can take pictures with the front facing camera in case the phone is stolen. Only for android 2.3.)

Text to speech (You can make the phone say: ‘I am lost – please pick me up!’)

Multiple phones on the same account

And many more features.

Our next blog entry we will cover virus protection software for smartphones.
